Former student is charged with threatening band camp participants with a gun at Saltville's Northwood High School

SALTVILLE, Va. ? A former Northwood High School student faces charges after police say he brought a gun to the Saltville school on Wednesday and threatened students.

Police said 19-year-old Kory Burgess threatened his 16-year-old girlfriend and other students, who were at the school for a band camp.

"The school has cancelled band camp until further notice," said Saltville Police Chief Steve Surber. "We're not taking it lightly, I can tell you that."

Burgess, of 224 Buckeye Street in Saltville, was held initially but released Thursday evening on $5,000 secured bond, Surber said.

Burgess, who is also a former band member, is charged with possession of a firearm on school property, trespassing on school property, disorderly conduct and assault on a juvenile.

"I'd say it was probably a jealous boyfriend," Surber said.

The chief also said Wednesday wasn't the first time Burgess has shown up at school events, and he's been told Burgess had also been disruptive and made threats at events last year.

Burgess showed up on Monday, the first day of band camp, and again on Tuesday, when he argued with his girlfriend, Surber said.

On Wednesday, he showed up three times ? the second was when he showed a gun, Surber said.
